The Different Types of Roofs Other Than Asphalt

Here at Sousa Roofing & Siding we install several other types of roofing systems other than asphalt. We will discuss the different types of roofs and the pro and cons of each. A roof does a lot for your home. It keeps you warm or cool and it keeps you protected from the elements. It also can add to the looks of your home. Here in Massachusetts we are subject to harsh winters. It’s important that not only a roof be installed correctly, but the right materials are used.

Slate Roof Installation

One popular style of roof is the slate roof. Slate proofs are very attractive in appearance and offer excellent protection from fire. They are also a unique roof and provide for a long roof life. They do have some disadvantages though. They are extremely expensive and are much harder to install since they require extensive structures to support the weight. You also cannot walk on the roof without risking damage to the tiles.

Metal Roof System

Another popular option is a metal roof. Metal roofs are also durable and offer a long life. They are also resistant to sleet and hail and when made from recycled metal they are very environmentally sound. They are however more expensive to install requiring special tools and skills. Some people might also object to the sound of a metal roof since they may be louder in the rain.

Cedar Shingles Roof System

Wood roofing comes in two style types wood shingles or wood shakes. The only difference is the appearance of your cedar roof once installed. Cedar shingles are machine cut and tapered off for a crisp and clean appearance, while cedar shakes are hand split giving them a more rustic appeal.

Functionally, the most important difference between cedar shakes and shingles is that shingles are milled more precisely than shakes. Cedar shakes are more irregular, and don’t lay as flat when installed. This creates gaps which can be penetrated by wind blown precipitation so professional installation is a must. It is more costly than the conventional asphalt roof shingle.
